WHILE I GET REAL

About my own hormonal health struggles

I’M CURIOUS. Have you ever felt brushed off by your doctor?

How about told that your symptoms are “all in your head” or that it’s “not possible” to experience the symptoms that you’re having when you’re ____________________ (insert female-centric condition here: on the pill, going off the pill, endometriosis, going through perimenopause, trying to get pregnant, suffering from an autoimmune condition, have PCOS….)

Here’s a scary statistic, nearly every single woman that walks into my hormone clinic has her own version of this story.

Even I have my own tale to tell.

You know, I can actually remember it so clearly.

I was about 24 years old and I walked into my gynecologist’s office looking for answers.

At this point I was only getting about 4 periods per year, I was overweight and suffering from a bunch of different symptoms like anxiety, eczema and PMS.  I had already spent years cycling through different types of birth control pills to try to stop my symptoms, but no one had ever told me what was actually going on in my body.

Through my own research I had a pretty good idea that I was suffering from a hormonal condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (also called PCOS.)  I went to my doctor so that I could confirm this.

As I sat down with her, I explained my symptoms and that I was curious and worried about my future fertility, as I had read that PCOS was the number one cause of infertility in women.

Her answer: “well, it sounds like it could be PCOS, but let’s just cross the fertility bridge when we get there. We can put you back on the pill until you’re ready to get pregnant”

That was it.

There are millions of women out there who followed that same advice only to come off the pill when they’re ready to have a baby and find out that their infertile.  (I know how true this is from the women who I work with in my clinic.)

Now don’t get me wrong, I have a tremendous respect for doctors and gynos around the world!  They’re overworked and often understaffed.  But I think that there are a huge number of women whose hormonal symptoms are going unnoticed, untreated and unacknowledged.

I can’t even count the amount of women I know personally who have felt brushed off by their doctor at some point, or even worse…. told that their hormonal symptoms are either “all in your head” or that the symptoms are completely unrelated.

When I first started researching hormonal health, I was shocked to find out just how many symptoms that I had were actually hormonal.

It turned out that I could connect the dots between what I thought were disconnected symptoms — anxiety, a low body temperature, irregular periods, eczema and even the fact that I could rely on getting a second wind of energy every night around 11pm — and trace them back to my hormonal balance.

But here’s the thing: your hormones don’t have to be crazy out of balance to start experiencing hormonal symptoms.

If you’ve ever experienced any of the following symptoms, it’s pretty likely that there is an underlying core hormonal imbalance that could use some help.

• PMS
• Anxiety
• Infertility / early-term miscarriage
• Mood swings
• Insomnia
• Skin conditions (anxiety, eczema, dandruff)
• Abdominal fat or “muffin top”
• Depression
• Low libido
• Heart fluttering / palpitations
• Cold hands and feet
• Breast pain
• and more…

You may just be discovering now that these hormonal symptoms are linked, or perhaps you’ve already been to your doctor or gyno only to find out that your “only option” is to take birth control pills or another medication.

There is another way though, but you have to be committed to being your own health advocate.

This isn’t about saying goodbye to doctors and medicine, instead it’s about getting to the bottom of your hormonal imbalance and working in cooperation with your body to give it what it needs to be healthy and balance.

This is about listening, really listening, maybe for the first time ever to what your body is actually trying to tell you.
